The bible term "drunk" simply means to be intoxicated or inebriant; a drunkard is one who is intoxicated.
Intoxicants are any substance that cause the mind to be in a state in which the ideas of a person are wild, irregular and unconnected, or do not correspond with the truth or with external objects; a roving or wandering of the mind; or in simple terms, a disorder of the intellect.
The most widely used intoxicant in the world is Alcohol. It has devastated millions. Not only destroying those who drink it, but it exacts it toll upon society in general through broken homes, accidental deaths, and poverty. Alcohol is also a poison that destroys the bodyís tissues, it is especially damaging to the liver and heart.
There are other intoxicants that Satan uses to destroy people that are called narcotics. These drugs include marijuana, cocaine, opium, etc.. Since GOD communicates with us through our minds, it is well to remember that intoxicants adversely affect every mental function. As the level of intoxicants in the system rises the person progresses through loss of coordination, confusion, disorientation, stupor, anesthesia, coma, and then death. Using intoxicants on a regular basis will produce loss of memory, judgment, and learning ability.
BUT NOAH DRANK WINE!
Some point to certain scriptural stories in the bible to justify their use of Alcohol. They often mention Noah, who got drunk. But look at what happened when he became intoxicated. "He uncovered himself, and passed out naked, and his son came in and saw him naked and was cursed." (Genesis 9:21).
Lottís daughters tricked him into becoming drunk and he ended up sleeping with his daughters.
Nabal became drunk and 10 days later he was smitten by the Lord and died. (1st Samuel 25:36-38).
Belshazzar, the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar threw a party in the bible, and they became drunk and what happened? God sent a hand, that wrote on the wall that he was weighed in the balance and found wanting, and that night Belshazzar was killed.
The people of the bible also participated in divorce, polygamy, slavery and incest. Though God permitted these things during the days of the Old Testament, it does not mean he endorsed it. For instance GOD who knew the people of Israel was hard hearted, permitted them to divorce their wives for almost any reason. Yet, Jesus explained that this wasnít the original plan of GOD, and it would not be this way for those he would give a new heart (Matthew 19:8). The Garden of Eden is the divine model to which the gospel is to restore us, and Alcohol and other intoxicants were not a part of Godís original plan.
DID JESUS DRINK WINE?
Yes, but when the bible speaks of Wine, does it always mean an alcoholic beverage?
Isaiah 65:8 "Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants' sakes, that I may not destroy them all."
The bible calls both the juice of the grape cluster and fermented grape juice wine. The New Wine (Grape Juice) was thought of as more precious than the fermented. The people had no way to preserve the grape juice, other than slightly fermenting it. Thus the majority of grape juice on hand was fermented, and the fresh grape juice was used on special occasions.
Why did the Godly people of the bible drink fermented grape juice, because it is all they had or to get a buzz? Eccesiastes 10:17 "Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!"
The common fermented wine of the bible days had very little alcohol content, and one had to either tarry very long at the wine bottle, or mix it with strong drink to become intoxicated.
Proverbs 23:29-30 "Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine."
Today many intoxicants are illegal to possess without a doctors prescription; should we obey the law of the land?
1Peter 2:13-15 "Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:"
Since modern man has access to refrigeration, running water, and nutritious drinks that are preserved with out fermentation, the only excuses for digesting intoxicants are:
It is medicine for an illness. 1Timothy 5:23 "Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities" (Sickness).
Or you are walking after, and fulfilling the lusts of the flesh. The holy Spirit does not cause one to have desires for intoxicants.
Is being intoxicated a fruit of the Spirit?
Galatians 5:19-21 "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."
Intoxication is a work of the flesh, and the bible warns that those who walk after the flesh will not inherit the kingdom of GOD.
Does the bible warn us that many people will be deceived by intoxicants?
Revelation 18:23 "And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived."
In this verse the term ďSorceriesĒ is translated from the greek word pharmakeia from which we receive the English word Pharmaceutical. Which simply means drugs.
Will the vast majority be lost because they will not repent of their use of these intoxicants before it is too late? Revelation 9:21 "Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries (Pharmakeia), nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts."
Many professed Christians who use intoxicants with those of the world, often speak evil (Smite with their tongues) Christians who teach against the use of such things; will they who eat and drink with the drunken be in the kingdom?
Matthew 24:48-51 "But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
Does the bible warn that there will be a time when people will want to hear a preacher teach the lie that it is all right to use intoxicants?
Micah 2:1 1 Liars and frauds may go around and say, "We will preach to you about wine and liquor." They would be just the type of preacher you want. (Godís Word Bible)
When a person truly becomes a Christian do they become a part of the royal priesthood?
1Peter 2:9 "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
What would happen to someone who came into the temple of GOD who had drunk an intoxicant?
Leviticus 10:9 "Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation (The temple), lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generation."
This should make a person THINK! The Christian is the TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (1st Corinthians 3:16-17)..
What warning did the Angel give to Manoahís wife?
Judges 13:4 "Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:"
Does the wise Christian partake of intoxicants?
Proverbs 20:1 "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise."
Should people who are a part of GODís Royal Family drink intoxicants?
Proverbs 31:4 "It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
What is one reason a person who loves GOD should never use intoxicants?
Proverbs 31:5 "Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted."
Intoxicants in even small amounts affects the nervous system, our memory and our ability to make right decisions, and will lead to the transgression of Godís law. It hinders the communication of the holy Spirit, and makes away for Satan to enter our minds.
Isaiah 28:7 "But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment."
What does God pronounce upon those who drink intoxicants?
Isaiah 5:22 " Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:"
Are drunkards ďrighteousĒ?
1Corinthains 6:9-10 "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God."
People who become intoxicated on alcohol or drugs will not be in Kingdom of GOD! Sin will not be in the kingdom.
What does Jesus say about the fait of those who entice his children to sin?
Luke 17:2 "It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend (Entice to Sin) one of these little ones."
For those whom drugs and alcohol does not appeal, Satan offers another form of intoxication.
You can also be drunk on the things of this life.
Luke 21:34 "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares."
We can have our minds so filled with the things of this world, that spiritual senses are clouded and we cease to think about our soulís salvation.
What did Jesus warn could keep people from bringing fruit unto perfection and receiving eternal life?
Luke 8:14 "And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection."
We would rather have the things of the world than the things of GOD. Our jobs become more important to us than the Commandments of GOD. Shopping becomes more important. A good time becomes more important Look around, why arenít people keeping GODíS Sabbath? Because they are drunk on the things of this world.
There is another intoxicant that has filled the land, and it has caused much confusion.
Rev 17:1-4 "And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:"
Many people have drunk from the cup of Babylon, and they have become intoxicated upon her wine.
How much of the earth has drank from her cup?
Jeremiah 51:7 "Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD'S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad."
Those who have become intoxicated upon her wine are in a state of confusion. The truth of GODíS word confuses them. Babylon is confusion, and GOD commands his people to come out of Babylon.
Knowing that satan works through all these means of intoxication, what does Peter tell us?
1Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:"
1Peter 1:13-19 "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; Because you are children who obey God, don't live the kind of lives you once lived. Once you lived to satisfy your desires because you didn't know any better. But because the God who called you is holy you must be holy in every aspect of your life. Scripture says, "Be holy, because I am holy." So if you call God your Father, live your time as temporary residents on earth in fear. He is the God who judges all people by what they have done, and he doesn't play favorites. Realize that you weren't set free from the worthless life handed down to you from your ancestors by a payment of silver or gold which can be destroyed. Rather, the payment that freed you was the precious blood of Christ, the lamb with no defects or imperfections."
Where do we need to be drinking?
John 4:14 "But whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life."
From the water of life. It is Only by drinking from the water of life that one can awake from the drunken stupor.
